Aviator - Toddler and Child Sizes

Worsted cotton, 5.5 mm hook (toddler) or 6.0 mm hook (small or large child)

Hat - work in continuous rounds (do not slip stitch or chain at the end of each round):
Ch 4, sl st to make a loop
Rd 1: In loop, hdc 9, dc 1 (10)
Rd 2: dc 2 in each st (20)
Rd 3: [dc 1, dc 2 in next] repeat around (30)
Rd 4: [dc 1 in each of next 2 st, dc 2 in next st] repeat around (40)
Rd 5 (for small child hat): [dc 1 in each of next 9, dc 2 in next] repeat around (45)
Rd 5 (for toddler or large child hat): [dc 1 in each of next 3, dc 2 in next} repeat around (50)
Rd 6-12: dc around (45, 50)
Rd 13: dc 38 (small child) or 43 (toddler or large child), hdc 3, sc 3, sl st 1

Earflap:
Row 1: Ch 2, dc 7
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, dc 2 in each of next 7
Row 3: Ch 2, turn, dc 2 tog, dc 1 in each of next 2, dc 2 tog, dc 1
Row 4: Ch 2, turn, dc 2 tog, dc 2 tog, dc 1
Row 5: Ch 1, dc 1 in each of next 2, sc 1, tie off
**repeat earflap on other side so that there are 18 (small child) or 22 (toddler or large child) stitches between them on the front of the hat.

Front flap:
Starting in the corner where the earflap meets the hat on the front side
Row 1: Sl st to start, ch 2, dc across to other flap
Row 2-4: Ch 2, turn, dc across
**do NOT tie off - continue to edging



Edging (continuing from Front flap):
ch 2, hdc around entire rim - I recommend to hdc 2 in the same stitch on corners (the corners of the earflaps and front flap)
Tie off, weave in all ends
Attach buttons
